Diagnosis discussion

Post by Tusky » Tue Sep 04, 2018 12:04 pm

@dancingbanana716 @likewow
Hey I wanted to chat here as to not derail the thread and because I'm guessing there will be more discussion!

So regarding the post I'm presuming you guys are talking about, @orangeom's, the reason we didn't do anything about it is because there was no specific diagnosis.

The problem I have now is where we are meant to draw the line. We allow you guys to say that colleen is a narcissist but not to get into the nitty gritty. I personally think that saying Josh might have a mental illness, but not specifically getting into it is not much different?

@gossipgranny@ratchetrachel what do you guys think

Josh has already said he struggles with depression. Also, saying you stay up all night and then asking for viewers help is a lot of opening the door. Staying up all night is a huge symptom of bipolar. I think it's weird in such a Let's Talk society that you guys are so scared of bringing up the m word. It's a little like not bringing up Colleen's names in the video. Mental illness should not have a stigma. It's really like saying they might have diabetes if they start bringing up in the videos that they have certain symptoms and then ask for viewers' help. I'm not arguing that we should talk about it on this forum. I'm rather saying don't shame people for talking about something that is not shameful. You act like this talk came out of a vacuum and rather it did not. I think it's way more shameful that people are speculating he's an alcoholic. I vote that the alcoholic talk, which is also considered a mental illness, be banned if you're trying not to be speculative. Him having two drinks in a blog is a far cry from alcoholism. This is all a slippery slope.

You're right. The door was open which is in our rules, which is why we've taken no action. The reason the rule is in place because I was on guru before here and speculation turned into matter of fact which then turned the illness into a weapon, then it got banned.
On top of this, there would be pages of "I think x has y because here is my life story" and arguing over part of a diagnosis.

I don't mind if the door is open and it's respectful, but when it gets carried away like the narc chat we need to discuss.

I’d have to agree with Tusky here.

While we don’t want people to come out and say “I think he has BPD or manic behavior,” saying he has sleep problems possibly due to mental illness skirts the line but it’s fine. Plus as Yelly has stated, he has admitted to struggling with depression.

I guess lower case speculation vs upper case speculation is the difference. If that makes sense? she’s narcissistic vs Narcissism.

I'm in agreement as well.

I think the main post in question is within the rules. No attempt at a diagnosis was made (i.e. I think Josh has schizophrenia, or bipolar, etc) just that the thought was there that there is likely some mental illness going on, tbd by a medical professional. People certainly make speculations like this on other YouTubers on the board semi frequently so I'm not sure why Josh would be any different.

I think we need to realize this is a gossip site and we're going to discuss our observations, which may include observations on someone's mental health but also maintain that we are only getting a glimpse into these people's lives so therefore we cannot delve too deeply or say things with certainty that have not been addressed directly by the person themselves as we DON'T actually know them, and as far as I know no one here is a licensed medical professional.

However, if this doesn't seem right or reasonable, this thread is for talking it out! 😃 it's definitely an iffy issue at times to try and find the right line on.

I guess this is where intuition, experience and personal speculation starts to compete with concrete and logical rules.

Colleen to me is a clear cut Narc. Like it couldn't be clearer if it was slapped in my face. Josh to me seems like someone to me who is SO fragile he could lose it any minute, and I worry about him reading stuff like that.

I also understand that is my personal speculation and experience speaking, so whatever you guys decide I totally support.

Personally I prefer the rule because it forces people to be a bit sensitive and thoughtful, it also gives us the backing against less reasonable people. I let things slide until it's run it's course or is getting too diagnosy or rude. I don't think mental illness is something to be ashamed of or tippy toed around, I just don't want it to get messy.

You can express concern etc, Josh MIGHT BE drinking a lot vs Josh IS an alcoholic

But we don't pick and choose who rules are applied to. I think despite how shit we think they are, we need to extend a bare minimum level of human respect to these people, which means not trying to diagnose them in any official sense. As strongly and clearly you feel about the narc signs in Colleen, someone else may see things in Josh or someone else they feel just as strongly about. But we don't know them personally in everyday scenarios to truly know. That's why we try to leave it to high level speculation and not go too deep or definitive in the discussions. My two cents anyways!

I think last night was a good example of why we don't like talking about mental health so matter-of-factly.
